This is a question sent in by anonymous on the “Ask Aaron Anything” link:
Hey Pastor! I was wondering in group prayers why is it better to stand? im not really well versed on this subject…
My Answer:
It is not better to stand. I stand personally most of the time because I focus better. If I am sitting and relaxing my mind begins to get lazy and my body gets sleepy. So for me, personally, I stand most of the time I pray. But when I am in my prayer closet I write or speak my prayers, most of the time, so that I can keep my mind focused. Good question, but I mostly try and stay obedient and just posture myself the way He says, through the Spirit. Sometime He tells me chill out and kneel. So in your prayer life do not just speak, listen. In corporate prayer, I believe in unity and agreement. I believe that people who stand together, kneel together, sing together, or whatever are practicing unity and order. So this is the best I can do for this answer. It is not better it is personal for me. I hope that corporate prayer is not our only prayer life but corporate prayer is important.
How do we truly live out Heaven on earth as in “Thy Kingdom come” which opened my eyes when you taught it in the series Carniverous? How do we change the old thinking that eternity is after death and that we are living eternity with God here on earth? Oh, in the first part of the question, I am thinking that “His will be done” has something to do with it and that is abiding in Him. I hope I am not being one of those people who are trying to get their mind to understand, if so please just check me now!!
yea for me most the time i focus better sitting. i dont think the way we pray has any real effect, after all, God seeks those who pray and worship in spirit and truth, the way our flesh is positioned has no effect on the spiritual. but in personal prayer i find it very proper to pray on my knees, as just a reminder of humility toward God.
In context to why standing up in prayer is helpful:
Most of our communication is in fact non verbal, as the old saying goes, “actions speak louder than words” depending on what you are praying about, i think that matching your physiology to your content of the prayer would be more effective in putting a person in the correct “mindset”. If you are praying against sin in your lives or you are waring for others souls, it is ALOT easier, at least for me, to get fired up and passionate about it if you have a firm strong stance almost prideful stance. If you are praying to be humbled, then you could probably fall to your knees and humble your physiology. But above all else, as Aaron said, do what God is telling you do.

& why do we have to hold hands? : )
