I am concerned that my young son might be gay. What do I do?

This is a question sent in by Concerned Father on the “Ask Aaron Anything” link:

I am concerned that my young son might be gay. He is showing signs in the way he talks, his mannerisms, the way he walks, he also chooses the female characters in video games. What should I do, how should I let him know it’s not ok? Thanks, Concerned Father.

My Answer:

I am not sure how old your young son is but I would make sure that you are not projecting your own fears onto him.  You may be worrying way too early!  The other thing is most homosexual men admittedly did not have a strong father figure in their life or any father at all.  It does fall on your shoulders not to project what will happen but to Father your son.  Make sure to spend a lot of time with your son, pray over your son, and talk to your son.  It is a great opportunity to evaluate your role as a father.  Are you spending enough time with him?  Are you showing a Christ like example?  Are you raising him or have you left that to mom?  Are you teaching him about Jesus and masculinity?  I think at this young stage it is best not to evaluate him but to evaluate yourself.   It is a proven fact that men pull masculinity out of men, moms can’t do it!  Another analogy I have heard is that when a dad throws his son in the air and catches him, like most dad’s do, it forms a security between the two, a confidence that dad will always be there to catch them.  That security makes a son feel safe not only that dad is there but also valued.  So teach your son the gospel, masculinity, and real love. Bless you my brother and if you need more specific help please feel free to contact me. It is hard to answer this question with not knowing who it is and not knowing your son.
