wow. that was intense! good stuff….very bold….we all need that kind of boldness. After watching that video I think I need to go pray now. lol Thanks Pastor!
Piper continually wrecks me. And this is another example of an amazingly simple yet profound revelation. We can't embrace Jesus as deliverer and reject him as our treasure. Powerful powerful stuff. This revelation has to transform not only our evangelism but our lives and love after Christ. So much here. Great video!
"Saving Faith does not embrace Jesus as a deliverer and stiff arm him as a treasure." That line wrecked me too.
GO GIRL!
I agree that you cannot scare people into heaven, but i do also believe Christians do not do a good enough job of showing the exceeding sinfulness of man compared to the exceeding holiness of God. We need to show man how sinful he is, and we need to show man the consequences of his sin which is hell. Only when mankind is in an utter fear
of God will they have the greatest desire to be saved, thus the greatest love for God. For Jesus said, "Those who have been forgiven more, love more." We need to show people what eternal danger there in before we tell them about how God has provided for there salvation. We need to realize how sinful we are before we can desire to be holy, we need to realize how were going to hell before we can desire to go to heaven. The woman who came up to Jesus and washed his feet with her tears and hair was inspired by a revelation of her sin which would lead to hell compared to the revelation of holiness that Christ exemplified, she knew she was going to hell, and that knowledge made her cling Christ all the more.

A.W. Tozer said "Our greatest duty as Christians is not to make converts, but to uphold the honor of God, by showing the exceeding sinfulness of man compared to the exceeding holiness of God." The gospel needs to stay the same as it always was, REPENT AND BELIEVE or you will die in your sins and go to hell, REPENT AND BELIEVE because Christ died to save you from hell. I think the problem with American Christianity is that in order to reach larger numbers the churches have reduced the gospel to only that which comforts the hearers. Jesus loves you, he died for you, he washed away your sins, if you believe in him your saved. Instead of the truth, you are a sinner, and you are going to hell, there is only one way out of hell and that is the blood of Jesus Christ, Repent and Believe and turn from your sin and Cling to Christ as your hope of Salvation. And because he have made Christianity into a feel good religion in this country where all you have to do is say a little magic jesus prayer and your saved the result is hundreds of thousands of churches filled with people who think there saved and ultimately are not because no one ever struck the fear of God in them, they have no desperation and they have no life.
Sorry guys ive been listening to alot of Paul Washer videos and hes got me fired up angry about how the true gospel is neglected in this country.
I hear you brother… I know we talked about this in a early post…

I can not agree with you more and I love paul washer too. But what John Piper was hitting on was how fear does not lead us to repentance and faith in Jesus. Ro 2:4 – "Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?" The thing that exposes how unholy we are is the awesome holiness of Jesus. It is in view of His mercy that we present our bodies as a living sacrifice. I can not stand the modern day gospel either but the Gospel of Jesus is not just Jesus saving us from hell it is Jesus our goal, our treasure, our hope, our life…
I know we agree but this challenged me to preach JESUS as the center of the Gospel and not hell as the center of the gospel. We can not take hell, sin, and depravity out of the Gospel but at the center of it is JESUS. Bless you my man and thanks for the feed back.
Yea man i agree. I just hate how alot of churches in this country completly preach Jesus as some lovey dovey thing without preaching sin or hell, we need to include the whole gospel. Like Mr. Joel Osteen with the largest congregation in the us, he didnt get that large of a congregation from preaching the true gospel of repentance faith and regeneration, but by dumbing down the gospel to attract as many people as possible. I do agree hell should not be the center of the gospel, it should be Jesus. But if we neglect to preach hell at all, how will people know what there being saved from? "Fear of God is the Beginning of Wisdom" and a God hating unbeliever is not gonna all of a sudden love God just because of who God is, hes gonna love God because of the full revelation of salvation, we need to know what exactly we've been saved from…
Continued… When I first started reading the bible and seeking out God, all i had was the conviction and fear the Holy Spirit put on my heart, i did not have the wisdom to love Christ for who he was yet, i had to fear him and fear hell enough to further seek him out. And when i devolped in knowing Christ my fear of hell depleated and a love for God arose, now whether i go to heaven or hell i will love Jesus with all of my heart. I think we both agree that we need to stay balanced and preach the whole true Gospel of Christ. Not one greasy grace jesus or one fire and brimstone Jesus, but we need to maintain the balance.
I hear buddy! I hate that too! We just got to preach truth and not try to fight that extreme with the other extreme. I feel ya.
Yep
That was a amazing sermon
